“Now the God of perseverance and of encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, that with one accord you may with one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Romans 15:5-6, WEBUS
Reflection
They say music is the universal language. Even when we don’t know the lyrics, we can appreciate the sound of instruments played so well they move our bodies. We can’t help but tap our feet or sway in our seat. Good music moves us.
The same is true when we step into a church that’s on one accord. We may not know anyone’s name, but the atmosphere is filled with this kind of harmony that puts us at ease. We’re moved by the sound of love and joy that fills the room. It’s the kind of sound that only comes from people operating with the same heart and mind, working toward a single purpose – to glorify God through Christ Jesus.
Paul’s letter to the church in Rome explains how we get there. We must lean on the God of perseverance and encouragement who has given each of us unique gifts and talents to use in his church. Sometimes we struggle finding our place because we compare ourselves to each other. But God calls us to share, not compare. Like an orchestra, he invites us to take our seat in the section designed for our gifts and to play the notes he gives us in concert with the person next to us – not competing, just harmonizing. The end result is a joyous sound of praise that welcomes strangers to listen in and to desire becoming a part of God’s great symphony.
Prayer
Lord, thank you for being the music in our hearts, moving us to act in harmony with your will. Help us to find our place in your church, use our gifts for your glory, and serve others as Christ has served us. Strengthen us when we struggle to find our parts, encourage us when we’re tempted to compare ourselves to others, and let us see the beauty in the unity of your body. In Christ Jesus name I pray, Amen.
