“Go, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”
Matthew 28:19, WEBUS

Reflection

These are Jesus’ words. A lot of Christians know them as “The Great Commission.” On the surface, they’re simple directions – teach and baptize. But as I reflect on them, I see how Christ was really talking about unity.

We don’t use the word disciple today much outside of religious circles. So it can feel weighty and stiff. It’s common for people to think of discipling others as telling people what to do and what not to do.

But I’ve learned teaching people to become disciples is more about showing them how to reflect Christ – his behaviors, his mindset. And that means baptism isn’t this religious moment where we’re immersed in water and have specific words spoken over us. When we get baptized, we’re declaring we fully submit to the authority of God, that includes the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Three parts, completely unified.

So in practice, this command we call The Great Commission is really a call to join in God’s work and we can only do that when we’re align our lives with His character. That means surrendering our personal agendas and embracing His perfect plans for us, both individually and collectively. We’re one body, united under Him as His children.

Prayer

God, thank you for inviting us to unite with you as your children Teach us to walk in the way of your son, Jesus Christ. Help us to learn from his heart, to reflect his character, to surrender our plans, and embrace yours. Disciple us to become the children you want us to be and use our lives to build up others in ways that honor you. In Christ Jesus name we pray, Amen.
