“Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.”
Colossians 3:14, WEBUS
Reflection
Have you ever watched a baby take its first step? It’s like watching courage wrapped in innocence. They’ve watched others do it and now they’re ready to try. First, they learn to stand, searching for balance as they use their tiny, little hands to lean on steady objects. Then, they put one foot in front of the other, wobbling in uncertainty. With each new step they gain confidence. And while they may fall during the process, they get back up and try again with the encouragement of those watching around them. It’s a marvel to see and a reflection of what it often looks like when we come into Christian community for the first time.
We wobble through forgiveness. We stumble in patience. And we sometimes fall hard when our pride or disappointment trips us up. But Paul reminds us that love is the foundation that steadies everything else. Love is God’s outstretched hand holding us when we’re unsure, lifting us when we fall, and guiding us toward maturity.
When we walk in love, we walk in the strength and security of God, turning our imperfect steps into moments of grace that we learn to give and receive. It shines a light on our motives, not our mistakes. And it changes how we see others because it helps us to see ourselves more clearly. With each step we move toward living in perfect harmony with our brothers and sisters in Christ, loving them as Christ has loved us – unconditionally.
Prayer
God, our father, thank you for showing us how to love. For holding our hands as we learn to walk this Christian journey. For being patient with us when we stumble and helping us stand so we can try again. Thank you for never giving up on us and encouraging us to keep trying with each step that we take. Help us to do the same for others. To show them the same unconditional love. Let us walk beside them in the good times and the bad, encourage them to get back up when they stumble, and to never give up trying just as you’ve never given up on us. Help us to become the community you desire us to be, walking in love as you bind us together as one family in Christ Jesus. In His name we pray, Amen.
