Have You Inquired of the Lord?

The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord.

Joshua 9:14 (NIV)

Today's Thought

The Israelites were on a mission to take the land God had promised them. He gave them instructions not to let the people living in the land to remain. They were to destroy them or drive them out. One of the towns, however, devised a plan to trick the Israelites. The Gibeonites pretended to be from a distant country and requested a treat with Israel. Instead of seeking guidance from God, they accepted the people at their word and made a treaty. Three days later, they realized the Gibeonites had lied but it was too late. If the Israelites broke the treaty, God would have punished them for breaking their word.

There are people today who act just like the Gibeonites. They lie to get what they want from the people they know are favored by God. To avoid being tricked like the Israelites into life-long commitments that are not for our good, we need to seek God's guidance. Whether it's relationships, loans, or any other kind of agreement, we need to know God's opinion on the matter. He will reveal which commitments are for us and which ones are against. We only need to inquire of Him first.

Today's Faith Affirmation

I will inquire of God before I make any life commitments.
