"I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.” - Luke 5:32

In Luke 5:32, Jesus said he didn't come to call those who thought they were righteous but instead came to call those who knew they were sinners and needed to repent. Jesus's words are a reminder of two barriers we face to hearing him call us: self-righteousness and lack of repentance.

All lives are involved around inventory. We take inventory of our clothes, homes, food, people and on occasion ourselves.  We replenish, discard, give away, lose, exchange or replace things and or people in our lives daily.  Why because they either hinder, add value or please us.  We keep track of the latest fashion trends, home improvements, eating do’s and don’ts, vacationing spots, best restaurants, cars, schools… all things to make our lives better. We can make many physical changes in our lives, but to have joy and peace in our lives, we have to make spiritual changes as well. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? (Mark 8:36); your soul can only experience true rest, joy and peace when your spirit is in harmony with God. If you are spiritually in line with God, this means that your lifestyle will be reflective of the word of God.

My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees. - Psalms 119:71

Suffering – no word can quite describe what it's like. When suffering, the pain never seems to end, the hurt never seems to go away, and it seems there is no end. But, the psalmist of 119 found a silver lining in his suffering: focus.

There are times in our lives when God requires our undivided attention. In case you haven't noticed, we can be a stubborn people; so, there are moments when God uses suffering to get that kind of attention. Like any good parent, it's not His preference but it is the only option we children sometimes provide.
